Cut over pads, not over a body

Game jerseys run 200 to 240gsm polyester with spandex panels set into the shoulder and side seams. The panels are what let the jersey sit over pads without the body riding up, and they are also what stops an opponent getting a grip on loose fabric.

Skill and lineman cuts are graded separately. A lineman jersey is cut fuller through the chest and shorter in the body; a skill jersey is cut tight with a shorter sleeve. Ordering one block for a whole roster is the most common mistake we see on incoming tech packs.

Numbers are sublimated into the panel or stitched down in tackle twill, never heat-pressed on top. A pressed number lifts at the corner after a season of contact and washing, and once it lifts it peels.

Integrated pants have the pad pockets built into the pattern rather than sewn in afterwards, which keeps the pad from shifting during play.

NFHS and NCAA numbering

NFHS requires numbers 8 inches high on the front and 10 inches on the back, in a colour that clearly contrasts with the jersey body. NCAA uses the same heights. Both restrict the use of the number 0 and duplicate numbers on the field at the same time. Send us your league's current rulebook page with the brief; the heights are stable but the trim and contrast rules are revised more often than most programmes realise.

Sizing over equipment

Give us the pad make and model if you have it. Fit over a shoulder pad varies by manufacturer more than it varies by player, and it is the single most useful thing you can tell us at brief stage.
