Graded on a women's block

The jersey is cut with a narrower shoulder, a shorter body rise and more room through the hip than the equivalent baseball top. Resizing a men's pattern gets the chest right and everything else wrong, which is why a lot of softball kit fits badly at the shoulder.

Tops run 140 to 160gsm micro-polyester interlock. Pants and knickers are 240gsm double-knit through the seat and knee, the same abrasion-resistant construction as our baseball pants, because sliding does the same damage in both sports.

Knickers are cut to finish below the knee with an elasticated or banded hem, and are graded separately from full-length pants rather than being the same pattern cut short.

Numbering and association rules

NFHS softball requires a number at least 8 inches high on the back, in contrasting colour, with front numbers optional at 4 to 6 inches. USA Softball and travel organisations set their own, and fastpitch and slowpitch programmes often differ. Send the rulebook page with the brief and we will confirm it on the sample.

Sizing and fit

Everything is graded on a women's block, with youth as a separate pattern rather than a scaled-down adult one. Knickers and full-length pants are graded independently.
